Green infrastructure can promote plant functional connectivity in a grassland species around fragmented semi‐natural grasslands in NW‐Europe

چکیده

Species may benefit from green infrastructure, i.e. the network of natural and anthropogenic habitat remnants in human-dominated landscapes, if it helps isolated populations remaining patches to be functionally connected. The importance infrastructure is therefore increasingly emphasized conservation policy counter biodiversity loss. However, there limited evidence, particularly plants, that promotes functional connectivity, supports colonization across a landscape. We applied landscape genetics test whether structural connectivity grassland perennial Galium verum, 35 landscapes Belgium, Germany Sweden. used multivariate genetic clustering techniques, nestedness analyses conditional inference trees examine landscape-scale patterns diversity structure plant surrounding semi-natural grasslands. Soil Disturbance as a Grassland Restoration Measure—Effects on Plant Species Composition and Plant Functional Traits

Soil disturbance is recognized as an important driver of biodiversity in dry grasslands, and can therefore be implemented as a restoration measure. However, because community re-assembly following disturbance includes stochastic processes, a focus only on species richness or establishment success of particular species will not inform on how plant communities respond ecologically to disturbance....

Extinction debt in calcareous grasslands PLANT SPECIES EXTINCTION DEBT IN A TEMPERATE BIODIVERSITY HOTSPOT: COMMUNITY, SPECIES AND FUNCTIONAL TRAITS APPROACHES

Destruction and fragmentation of (semi-) natural habitats are considered the main causes of biodiversity loss worldwide. Plant species may exhibit a slow response to fragmentation, resulting in the development of an extinction debt in fragmented plant communities. The detection of extinction debt is of primary importance in habitat conservation strategies. We applied two different approaches pr...

Plant species richness and functional composition drive overyielding in a six-year grassland experiment.

Plant diversity has been shown to increase community biomass in experimental communities, but the mechanisms resulting in such positive biodiversity effects have remained largely unknown. We used a large-scale six-year biodiversity experiment near Jena, Germany, to examine how aboveground community biomass in grasslands is affected by different components of plant diversity and thereby infer th...

Changes in Plant Species Richness Induce Functional Shifts in Soil Nematode Communities in Experimental Grassland

BACKGROUND Changes in plant diversity may induce distinct changes in soil food web structure and accompanying soil feedbacks to plants. However, knowledge of the long-term consequences of plant community simplification for soil animal food webs and functioning is scarce. Nematodes, the most abundant and diverse soil Metazoa, represent the complexity of soil food webs as they comprise all major ...

Vegetation in clear-cuts depends on previous land use: a century-old grassland legacy

Plant species richness in central and northern European seminatural grasslands is often more closely linked to past than present habitat configuration, which is indicative of an extinction debt. In this study, we investigate whether signs of historical grassland management can be found in clear-cuts after at least 80 years as coniferous production forest by comparing floras between clear-cuts w...
